Introduction:Present in China since the mid-1980s, Intel increased its involvement in the mid-1990s when it planned to build its first chip testing and assembling facility in Shanghai. By 2004 Intel had 14 sales offices and had invested in 30 Chinese technology ventures. Intel had set up three research laboratories to develop Intel products for the future. With significant investments in manufacturing plants and brand promotion in China, Intel had become the major provider of chips for computer and cell phones in China by 2004.

Simultaneously, the enticing chip market of China had also attracted other companies like Advanced Micro Devices (AMD) and Samsung, which were posing competitive challenges to Intel. Besides, China was also witnessing the establishment of many domestic chip making companies like Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp. (SMIC). It was being opined that in future China would be producing chips that would be on par with those of Intel's. Commenting on this, Intel's Chief Executive Officer, Craig Barrett (Barrett) said, "Well, it's not one of the things that comes up in our annual strategic review. We tend to look at things in the five-year range in those reviews. But in the ten- to 15-year range, do I think that possibility exists? Yes, I do".
